Get Cozy & Camera Ready: A Sneak Peek into Your In-Home Photography Session

You've hired me for an in-home photography session, but now what? Whether it’s a family session, a cozy couples shoot, or a celebration like a birthday or anniversary, there's something undeniably special about capturing moments in the comfort of your own space. But what can you expect during this intimate experience? Let’s dive in so you can be fully prepared.

The Pre-Session Essentials-

Do I Need to Clean My House?

Your home doesn't need to look like it belongs in Better Homes and Gardens for your in-home photo session, but I strongly suggest tidying up the rooms with the best natural light. If there are piles of laundry, tuck them away; if there's a stack of mail or paperwork, move it to a room we won't be using; and if there are toys scattered around, put them away just before I arrive. Essentially, there's no need for a deep clean or a flawless home, but removing distractions will help create a warm, inviting setting for your photos.

What Time is best For Our Photo Session?

I aim to utilize the natural light that enters your home, so I plan sessions for mid-morning or early afternoon when the light is at its peak. My objective is to find areas within your home that offer sufficient light to capture your family beautifully. Upon arriving at your home, I will search for the rooms with the best window light. However, I also want to use spaces that you love. A cozy living room with a comfy couch can add warmth to your portraits, while a well-lit kitchen can bring out the charm of everyday life. So, I'll also bring along some off camera flash just in case we need to add in an extra pop of light.

What Should My Family Wear?

So, what should you wear? Comfort is key! Opt for clothing that represents your personal style but also feels great to wear. When picking outfits aim for muted colors. Steer clear of bright reds, pinks, oranges and yellows. Instead aim for earthy tones or pastels. Select colors for your family that harmonize and enhance each other. Aim for a palette of 2 to 3 colors, then incorporate one accent piece that matches your color base. This accent could be a printed dress for mom or daughter, or a top for dad or son. Or a sweater, top or scarf that brings a little pop to your color pallet.

During the Session

When I arrive, I'll take a minute to chat and let your children warm up to me, and let then we'll let the creative energy flow! I will guide you through various poses and help create a relaxed environment while capturing candid moments. Remember, it’s perfectly normal to feel a little awkward initially, but just let your personality shine through! Laugh, interact, and share those genuine moments with your loved ones. The best photos often come from the moments you weren’t even aware were being captured.

Keeping the Fun Alive

Photography sessions are not just about standing still and posing; they can be loads of fun! We can incorporate activities like baking in the kitchen, lounging in your living room, or playing games in the backyard. Engaging in activities brings out authentic moments and smiles.

So, don’t be shy! Get involved in whatever feels natural. Your enjoyment will translate into beautiful pictures that resonate with your family’s spirit.

An in-home photography session is more than just about the final images—it's about the experience, the joy, and the memories created. From choosing the right time and outfits to enjoying a cozy atmosphere with your loved ones, expect a day filled with laughter, connection, and celebration.

So, get cozy and camera ready! Your in-home photography adventure awaits, and it will undoubtedly capture the essence of your family in ways that go beyond just pictures. Embrace the journey, and let the magic unfold right in your own space.
