Why You Shouldn’t Share Your Wedding Photos With Vendors (and What to Do Instead)

After your wedding day, it’s completely natural to want to relive every moment—and to share those beautiful images with the vendors who helped bring your vision to life. Your florist, venue, planner, or makeup artist may even ask if you can send them photos to use for their portfolio or social media.

While the intention is kind and appreciative, there’s something important every couple should know:

Sharing your wedding photos directly with other vendors goes against copyright.

Let’s walk through what that means and how to handle it the right way—easily and respectfully.

Understanding Copyright in Wedding Photography

When you hire a professional wedding photographer, you’re investing in their creative work. By law, the photographer automatically owns the copyright to the images they create unless otherwise stated in your contract.

As a couple, you receive a personal-use license, which allows you to:

  • Share your photos on social media

  • Download and save your images

  • Print photos for personal use

  • Share your gallery with friends and family

What that license does not include is permission to distribute images to third parties—such as vendors—for commercial or promotional use.

Why This Matters

When vendors use wedding photos, they typically do so to:

  • Promote their business

  • Share images on social media or websites

  • Use photos in marketing or advertising

This type of use is considered commercial, and only the photographer has the legal authority to grant permission for it.

Even though it may feel harmless, sending images directly to vendors unintentionally bypasses the photographer’s rights and can create legal and professional complications.

The Right Way to Share Wedding Photos With Vendors

The good news? This is easy to handle—and you don’t need to be the middleman.

If a vendor is interested in using images from your wedding, they can simply contact me directly. I’m always happy to work with fellow vendors and provide images in a way that is:

  • Properly licensed

  • High-quality and optimized

  • Correctly credited

This protects everyone involved and ensures the images are shared ethically and professionally.

What to Say If a Vendor Asks You for Photos

If a vendor reaches out asking for images, you can respond with something simple like:

“I don’t have permission to distribute the photos, but you’re welcome to reach out to our photographer directly—they’d be happy to help!”

No awkwardness. No stress. Just a clear and professional response.

A Final Note for Couples

Your job after your wedding is simple: enjoy your photos and your memories. You shouldn’t have to worry about copyright rules or vendor permissions—that’s part of what you hire a professional photographer for.

If any vendor ever asks for images from your wedding day, please send them my way. I truly love collaborating with other creatives and am always happy to help—when it’s done the right way.

If you ever have questions about photo sharing or usage, I’m always here to help. 🤍
