Why I Choose Not to Provide a Client Closet for My Photography Sessions

Updated: Aug 29

In the world of photography, every choice made behind the camera can significantly shape the narrative being told. From the setting to the colors, each element contributes to the story that's being captured. One question that often comes up in the photography community is whether to offer a client closet. While this service appeals to many photographers, I have chosen a different path.

I Want to Tell Your Story

Every individual has a story, and authentic storytelling is at the heart of my photography. By encouraging clients to dress in their own unique styles, I can capture the essence of who they are. If I were to give my clients clothing to wear, I feel, it would take away from who they are. The session then would become something totally different. It wouldn't be about capturing who my clients are but moves to attaining a certain level of perfection and playacting. Which isn't bad if you are creating a scenario for a themed photo shoot, but it isn't your daily. It isn't where you live. I want to see your daily. I want to photograph YOU.

When you select your own wardrobe, it adds a layer of authenticity to the images. Your choices reflect your individuality, making it easier for me to tell your story accurately. The power of imagery lies not just in the venue or setting but also in the authenticity of the subjects.

This commitment to storytelling fuels my approach to every session, ensuring that the photographs are not just beautiful but also meaningful.

I Want You to Be You

Photography is not just about capturing the moment; it's also about capturing the spirit of the person or people in front of the lens. Each client is a one-of-a-kind individual, and I believe that authenticity should shine through in their images. When clients wear outfits that they feel comfortable and confident in, it reflects in their demeanor and the photos taken.

By allowing my clients to choose their outfits, I foster an environment where they can express themselves freely. This choice separates my photography sessions from standard portraits that often lack personal expression. Being yourself means wearing something that resonates with you emotionally, whether it’s a bold statement piece or a simple, classic look.

Moreover, feeling confident in your attire allows for more relaxed and genuine interactions during the session. This results in natural smiles and candid moments that create beautiful and memorable images.

Real Life Doesn’t Revolve Around Trends

In the ever-changing world of fashion, it can be easy to get swept up in the latest trends. However, not all trends fit every individual, and what is fashionable today might not stand the test of time. By opting out of a client closet filled with trendy items, I focus on creating timeless images that won't feel outdated just a few months later.

Choosing your wardrobe outside the constraints of trends allows for a more personal and tailored approach to fashion. This is particularly important in photography, as the images captured should evoke feelings and memories for years to come. When your clothing reflects who you are rather than what is currently trending, the photographs gained will remain relevant and appreciated in the long run.

Practical Tips for Choosing Your Outfit

While it's clear why I choose not to offer a client closet, it's also essential to guide my clients in selecting the perfect attire for their session. Here are some practical tips to help you choose what to wear:

  1. Be Yourself: Opt for clothing that makes you feel like the best version of yourself. This often translates into confidence in your images.

  2. Choose Comfortable Fabrics: Comfort is key. Try to avoid materials that restrict movement or require constant adjustment during the session.

  3. Coordinate, Don’t Match: If you’re photographing multiple people, aim for outfits that coordinate well rather than matching exactly. This adds depth to the images while preventing a cookie-cutter look.

  4. Colors Matter: Consider the location and backdrop of your photos. Rich, solid colors often stand out beautifully against varied landscapes. I often encourage earth tones which go nicely with most locations.

  5. Accessorize Wisely: Accessories can bring personality to your outfit but avoid overloading them. Choose one or two key pieces to elevate your look; this can be a jacket, a hat, a piece of jewelry.

  6. Plan Ahead: Take the time to try on various options before the session. Ensure that everything fits well and that you feel confident in your choices.

My goal for my photography business of to align with my core values: authenticity, individuality, and timelessness. My aim is to tell your story, showcase who you are, and create images that withstand the test of time.

As you prepare for your next photography session, remember that the most important accessory you can bring is your authentic self. Embracing your individuality will not only enhance your confidence but also ensure that the photos taken will resonate with you for years to come.

I look forward to capturing your story—an adventure that is beautifully and uniquely yours.
